Originally settled in 1750 at the junction of the Mad river and Still River Winsted was one of the first mill towns in Connecticut.
In 1955 two hurricanes hit Winsted within a week of one another and caused the Rivers to flood.
Northwestern Connecticut Community College was founded in Winsted in 1965 by Residents (including Ralph Nader's brother).
