Litchfield was created in 1751 by the Connecticut General Court from land that then belonged to Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties.

Litchfield Historic District is a fine example of a late 1700s New England town. The area was declared a national historic landmark in 1968.

Litchfield Meeting House was completed in 1829. It is one of the main spots to see in the Litchfield National Historic Landmark District.
